The Dean of the Faculty of History at Nicolaus Copernicus University, the Director of the Institute of History and Archival Sciences at NCU, and the Department of Military History at NCU invite you to The Second Toruń–Debrecen Seminar, which will take place on 21 April 2026 at 1.30 pm in the Collegium Humanisticum, room C.0.39.

The seminar is a continuation of academic cooperation between researchers from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and the University of Debrecen. The event will bring together historians from Poland and Hungary, whose presentations will cover a wide range of topics in modern and contemporary history, cultural history, diplomacy, military affairs, and reflections on Europe’s intellectual heritage.

Agenda:

  • prof. Jarosław Dumanowski (Nicolaus Copernicus University)
Identity, Distinction, and the Construction of Taste: A Reading of Polish and Hungarian Cookbooks from the Late Seventeenth Century

  • prof. Csaba Lévai (University of Debrecen)
The Impact of the American Revolution in Hungary and Poland at the End of the 18th Century

  • dr Katalin Schrek (University of Debrecen)
Austro‑Hungarian Economic Penetration in the Balkans in British Consular Reports during the First Half of the 1880s

  • prof. Róbert Barta (University of Debrecen)
A Hungarian Soldier in Vilnius. First World War Diary of László Földváry

  • Mateusz Piotrkiewicz (Nicolaus Copernicus University)
Turning points in the Polish‑Czechoslovak diplomatic relations in the interwar period

  • dr Kinga Czechowska (Pilecki Institute)
Planning for peace during a wartime. Polish government’s visions of Poland in post‑war order during the Second World War

  • dr Iwo Bohr (Nicolaus Copernicus University)
Looking to the stars, Feet on the Ground: Cultural and sociological dimensions of the traditional astronomical observatory

Particular mention should be made of the participation of Mateusz Piotrkiewicz, a student at the Faculty of History at Nicolaus Copernicus University, who, in his paper, will address important and rarely discussed aspects of diplomatic relations between Poland and Czechoslovakia during the interwar period.

The seminar provides an excellent opportunity for the exchange of academic ideas, the deepening of international research cooperation, and discussion of current trends in historical research.

We warmly invite academic staff, PhD students, undergraduates and anyone interested in history.
