Professor Magdalena Niedzielska has passed away
It is with disbelief and sadness that we received the news that Professor Magdalena Niedzielska, a lecturer in the Department of 19th–20th Century History and Contemporary History at the Institute of History and Archival Studies within our Faculty, passed away suddenly on Friday 27 March 2026 at the age of 67. Some of us had seen her in the corridors of the Collegium Humanisticum just two days before her death.
Professor Magdalena Niedzielska was a native of Toruń – she was born in 1958. After completing her A-levels, she began studying history at Nicolaus Copernicus University; her supervisor for both her Master’s thesis and her doctoral thesis was Professor Sławomir Kalembka. She began working at Nicolaus Copernicus University as early as 1980. She obtained her PhD in 1989 and her habilitation in 1998. In 2018, she was appointed full professor. For many years, she served as head of the Department of 19th-Century History. Her research interests focused on the history of 19th-century Prussia and Germany, as well as the history of German political thought during that period. She also dealt with issues in the regional history of East and West Prussia, which fed into her passion for collecting. Professor Magdalena Niedzielska’s body of work includes over a hundred publications. She taught courses primarily on 19th-century history and the history of German-speaking countries, but also on English and American political thought and the history of the United States.
May her memory be honoured!
